The Asylum Street Spankers - Austin, TX
Mommy Says NO! CD Review
By Patrick Ferris
It seems that every time I see the Asylum Street Spankers I go through the same initial "New Member" anxiety from their constantly changing band roster, but I always walk away from each show more impressed than the last time I saw them. They are like a bottomless well of talent and prolific songwriting, with each member contributing top-notch musicianship, showmanship and songwriting while keeping the same feel that is so signature of the Spankers' sound.
On tour supporting their newest CD 'Mommy Says NO!', The Spankers deliver the goods with their first venture into the realm of Children's Music.
With albums 'Spanker Madness' and 'Dirty Ditties' paving the road to success for this Austin band, fans almost come to expect The Spankers to have their CDs peppered with profanity, but 'Mommy Says NO!' delivers the full package; a dozen songs that stretch the gamut of genres, supurb musical arrangements, brilliant lyrics and comedic genius, all delivered in traditional Spanker fashion that reaches the very heart of every child of every age...and all without a vulger word.
From beginning to end, Mommy Says No! is The Asylum Street Spankers at their finest moment. This is more than just a recording of children's songs...it's children's songs that children can relate to. 'You Only Love Me For My Lunchbox' gives a unique perspective of a 3rd grader's material possessions, while title track 'Mommy says No!' is a perfect musical adeptation of a child's temper-tantrum. This CD bridges the generation gap with songs like 'Boogers', which has more references that only adults would understand, but is still a favorite among kids.
I can't say enough good things about this band and am always blown away by their live performance. I'm hoping their next theme based CD will be from their ever growing list of politcal songs.
